I grew up in an Italian neighborhood in a big city where Pizza has a reputation to uphold. My favorite kind is the deep dish Chicago-style loaded with toppings and a thick crust.
This recipe is halfway between the deep-dish style and the thin-crust from New York, and will definitely put a smile on your face.
Most people are afraid to make pizza from scratch because it seems so complicated and time-consuming. But that couldnβt be farther from the truth!
π If you start with my pizza crust recipe:
π Pizza Crust (Easy as Pi)!
Iβm always amazed by how much it costs to buy a pre-made pizza crust in the grocery store. Even the pizza dough from your local bakery seems pricey. Thereβs really nothing to it that is expensive or complicated.
π β¦and then whip out a jar of my salsa:
Salsa! Salsa! Salsa!
Β·My husband and I are big salsa fanatics and, even though we rarely eat chips anymore (boo!), we quit buying jarred salsa to make it from home instead.
π β¦all you need are the toppings and an oven!
Time to make it
Prep time: 15 minutes.
Bake Time: 25-30 minutes
(depends on how brown you like the cheese on top)Total Time: 40-45 minutes
Letβs start with the equipment you will need so that you can be ready to go.
In the kitchen
ingredient bowls (like cereal bowls, used for ingredients to assemble)
cheese shredder
pizza cutter or cleaver
firm spatula
cutting board
kitchen knife
Ingredients
One 16 ounce pizza serves a party of 3-4 people, and can be refrigerated or frozen.
If you donβt like any of these toppings, swap them out for what you prefer.
(1/2-2/3) cup pizza sauce (this is my salsa recipe which is also great for pizza)
(1) lb cooked ground pork sausage
(1-2) cups chopped vegetables of your choice (red peppers, onions, etc.)
(1/4) cup sliced olives
(1-2) finely sliced jalapeno peppers
(1) cup sliced mushrooms
(8) ounces shredded mozzarella or pepper jack cheese (both if you have them!)
Directions
Set the oven to 400βF and put frozen pizza crust in to warm up for 5-8 minutes.
Note: if you like your pizza crust crunchy, leave it in there for an additional 2-3 minutes until it starts to brown.
Once warmed, add toppings:
sauce β meat β vegetables β olives β jalapenos β mushrooms β cheese
Additional Tips
Leftovers can stay in the refrigerator up to two days, and freeze well.
Reheat refrigerated pizza for 30 minutes on 400βF with aluminum foil to protect toppings from burning. Remove foil and bake for an additional 2 minutes.
Frozen pizza may take longer to reheat, depending upon how cold you keep your freezer.
Freeze or eat within 2 days after preparation to ensure freshness.
